These are the same displays we use on the Microcontroller Education Board

utilising the HD44780 controller these displays can show all characters and even custom characters when loaded into the memory

These displays also have a fantastic blue LED backlight that can be brightness controlled with appropriate PWM control. A potentiometer will be required to control the LCDs contrast.
